Gotye- Somebody That I Used To Know

Apparently I've been under a rock or something, because this song has been out for a few months... But, I heard this song on 89.3 The Current and I.CAN'T.STOP.LISTENING.TO.IT.

IT IS INSANELY AWESOME.

Please watch the video and listen to the entire song... it's one of those that keep getting better and better!

The song is kind of sad... but very true in what they are singing about.

I see it representing the viscious cycle of love... The aftermath once you have been hurt by someone.  The paint represents this very well.  At the beginning of the video, Gotye is naked, his skin uncovered by the paint.  He is singing about his relationship and as it unravels and we get to the chorus- he slowly becomes covered by this memory and it changes him.  His bitterness about how it ended and that she is now just someone he used to know is all over him.  Then, Kimbra enters and she is painted everywhere but her face, representing that he has almost engulfed her in all of his pain.  She blames herself sometimes for their fighting, but then realizes it's because he isn't over his previous relationship.  When she confronts him, he goes back to the chorus about the previous hurt, while hurting her in the process.  Kimbra's paint washes off and represents her walking away from the situation... Yet, Gotye is still covered in it.

Please watch the facial expressions while they sing... it is incredibly intense!

I hope you love this song as much as I do...

Here are the lyrics:
"Somebody That I Used To Know"
(feat. Kimbra)

[Gotye:]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Gotye:]
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
And you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)

  2. OMGGGGGGGG. I LOVE this song. It could apply to a million different love scenarios. The man thinks everything is okay, but he's not making his girl happy, so she leaves. But he still wants to be friends and she doesn't. She pulls away and he hurts. FUCK. Love is so complicated.

This little diddy expresses that very well. I think I might have to download this one. It's a keeper. Or at the very least I'll have to listen to this 1,500,000 times. Or use this song to analyze the range of human emotions.

    I wish it wasn't so sad. :-(

Great song pick, A. +1 to you.

  3. Sarah- I know what you mean.. it just grabs ya. And the simplicity of it all is what makes it so awesome!

B.- It's soooo good. I'm a woman obsessed. I feel like it reprsents the viscious cycle of love. You get hung up on someone that you 'used to know' who hurt you, and you can't let go... which leads to you inevitably hurting someone new in the process... it just goes on and on. It is very sad... But catchy as all hell.
