I Want Your Crazy

I was going through my notebook yesterday- this notebook (It is almost dead, less than 5 pages remain):

I must go and buy another notebook today.  I will feel naked without one in my bag at all times.

But, back to my original point-- I was going through my notebook yesterday and I came across this quote I had written down from Dave Eggers memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius:

"Oh please.  What would a brain do if not these sorts of exercises?  I have no idea how people function without near-constant internal chaos.  I'd lose my mind."

I also wrote down the page number (214).  I grabbed the book and pulled it open and, sure enough, I had highlighted that section and scrawled the words "Brilliant!"  There are a few other quotes in the pages following where I had underlined certain parts.

(Does anyone else do this to the books they love?)

Are you one of them?

I don't write in books, but I'm a special kind of crazy. I don't break the spines on books, I'm careful with the pages, I don't lend them out.

    1. I second you with not lending them out. A few years ago, I lent out my copy of The Sorcerer's Stone- didn't get it back for about 8 months (had to go out of my way to pick it up!) It was treated terribly, the cover art was partially rubbed off... grrr. And now, my good friend has had my copy of The History of Love since February and I'm about to tweak about it! No more lending!

  2. I've never written in any books other than text books. I like to keep them as neat and pristine and I can. For some reason. I never turn them in, I don't like to lend them out (you never get them back), and I hardly ever re-read them. So, really, I'm not sure why I take such good care.

  3. I write all over my books. It's almost like having a conversation with the author in a way..
