Take This Waltz

You know the movies and/or stories that make you reflect quietly on life in general?  The ones that you love but can't help but feel a little sad once it's over?

Take This Waltz is that kind of story.

It's real, honest... and breaks your heart.

Michelle Williams character is a bit-- boring?  is that the right word?  for my taste-- but, then again, I think that is also the point.  She's 28 years old and doesn't have a very exciting life... she is grasping for more-- intimacy, newness... and dances with the devil known as "What if..."

The director, Sarah Polley, really knew what she was doing.  The shots in this movie are brilliant!

There is a bit (okay, quite a lot) of nudity in this film.  And, Sarah Silverman just kills it.  The entire cast is believable (even Seth Rogen).

For those of you with Netflix-- it's available and you have no excuse to not watch it.

Any of you seen this film?  I'd love to discuss it with you!

  2. I watched it a couple of weeks ago. I'd been saving it for a time to watch when I was alone. I sobbed through just about the entire thing. You see, Michelle Williams character? That was pretty much me a few years ago. I got the what if itch. Lucky for me my husband was there and willing to work things out when I saw that "what if" really wasn't for me.

It was a really well acted movie. It was real. The plot, the characters, the different "happenings", it is all so very real. Maybe a little too real.

I love the scene with her on the scrambler. That's such an amazing piece of imagery because that's exactly what it's like. You get caught up in the lights, the music, the wind- you totally lose yourself. Then the ride stops, the music stops, and the harsh white lights of reality come on. You look around yourself, almost confused. How had what was so sparkly and shiny just turned back to bleak everyday business?

That movie struck a very deep chord within me. I'll never watch it again.

    1. I don't think I can watch it again. Maybe, just once more. But, it is one of those movies that just follow you around everywhere you go, forever. "Everything new becomes old." SO DAMN TRUE. It's a lot like the novel (and movie) Revolutionary Road (my favorite)-- it's almost too honest and real.

    2. Revolutionary Road, I call that the sequel to Titanic- What Would Have Been. I loved the book. It also was one of those that really gets in there, under your skin. It almost makes you itch. The movie, it was beautifully made and well acted, but I was too distracted by Jack and Rose together again to be moved by it like I was the book.
